In 1956, the dairy was first established in Rajkot by the Animal Husbandry Department of the Gujarat State under a pilot project of UNICEF - a sister concern of the UNO. Subsequently the Rajkot District(Dist.) Maldhari Cooperative Union Ltd. was formed on 5.9.1961 with the objective to bring "socio-economic development" in Maldhari Community (Animal keepers).

This year, the Rajkot District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union Ltd.(RDCMPULtd.) is celebrating its "Golden Jubilee" and we must think and plan to build a better organized and strong co-operative Dairy Industry, to provide number of services to the milk producers which will improve their socio-economic status and make available pure milk and milk products of commendable quality.

A Closer View of the History

1966-67

  • The Gopalak Union got its representation in the committee for regulating the rates of milk-purchase.
  • Government decided to set up a cattle-feed factory at Rajkot, responding to the demand of Rajkot Gopalak Union.

1967-68

  • Gopalak Union started the sale of Amul Cattle feed from the Amul Cattle feed factory.

1968-69

  • The historic decision of handing over the management of Government owned dairy to Gopalak Union.

1969-70

  • On 21/02/70 the management of Government Milk Scheme, Rajkot, was handed over to Rajkot Gopalak Union with the token of Rs.1.
  • Government handed over the cattle-feed factory to Gujarat Agro Industries and the Gopalak Union was appointed as the distributor of Rajdan (Cattle-feed).
  • Beginning of selling milk in the sealed cans through 62 milk outlets in the city of Rajkot.

1970-71

  • Beginning of selling of cow's-milk in the sealed bottles in Rajkot City.
  • Guidance received from Dr. Kurien, the chairman of NDDB, regarding management of the dairy and purchase price of milk.
  • Gopalak Union started working for the development of milk societies.

1971-72

  • On 01-02-1972 following the advice of Hon'ble Governor of Gujarat Shree Shrimannarayanji, the state government resolved to handover the dairy to Gopalak Union on permanent basis.
  • Decision to implement contract method for milk procurement.
  • Beginning of selling buffalo milk in the sealed bottles in Rajkot.
  • Gopalak Union manufactured 'Gopal Ghee' and started selling it in 1, 2, and 4 kg packs and decided to market Gopal Ghee in Mumbai.
  • Production of skimmed milk powder started.
  • Formulation of service rules and regulation of Gopalak Union, and its implementation.

1972-73

  • Condition of severe famine in Rajkot district- milk producers/maldharies distributed 83000 kgs of hay and a subsidy of Rs. 50 was given for cattle-feed.

1973-74

  • To meet the in milk procurement, Mehsana/Palanpur dairies came forward to compensate.

1974-75

  • Dr. Kurien's guidance from NDDB Anand in the management of the dairy and procedure started for availing financial assistance.
  • Dairy development process greatly affected due to the condition of scarcity and employees' strike.

1975-76

  • Lot of assistance received from various government projects as the D.P.A.P. scheme got implemented in the talukas of Jasdan and Wankaner.
  • Selling of milk began in Bhuj and Gandhidham of Kachh district.

1976-77

  • Implementation of joint management of Rajkot Gopalak Milk Union and Gujart Dairy Development Corporation Ltd. from 01-04-1977.
  • D.P.A.P. passed the grant for cooling units at Wankaner and Vinchhiya.
  • Implementation of bi-polar system in fixing purchase rates of cow-milk.
  • Sale of Gopal Ghee started in Mumbai.
  • Purchase of sterilizing machine for manufacturing flavoured milk.

1977-78

  • Production of Gopal Penda and Gopal sterilized milk started.
  • Gopal dairy outlet at Rajkot Bus Depot.
  • Dr.Kurien accepted in principle to include Rajkot district in 'Operation Flood-2'.

1978-79

  • Sanction of a grant worth Rs. 12 lakh from UNICEF for manufacturing sterilized flavoured milk.
  • The sale of Gopal skimmed milk powder began in Kolkatta and West Bengal.
  • The sale of Gopal Shrikand & Maska started.

1979-80

  • Decision to start selling Gopal pasteurized milk from the very next day of Morbi flood calamity.
  • Starting of the sale of Gopal skimmed milk powder in the attractive packs of 500 gms.

1980-81

  • The union purchased pre-pack machine and started selling milk in plastic pouches.

1981-82

  • Adaptation of model sub-laws of NDDB and started functioning as "Rajkot District Co-operative Milk producer's Union Ltd."

1982-83

  • From 11-04-1982 the management of the dairy owned by Rajkot milk union was handed over to Gujarat Dairy Development Corporation.
  • Opening of 14 artificial insemination centers to develop the activities of animal husbandry under Operation Flood-2, and Mobile Animal Health Unit launched on 21st April 1983.

1983-84

  • From 02-11-1983 Rajkot Milk Union handed over the management of Dairy Plant to Gujarat Dairy Development Corporation on live and license bases.

1984-85

  • The union started the process of animal purchase and animal insurance.

1985-86

  • Under Operation Flood two mobile animal health units were started.

1986-87

  • Under the scheme of Operation Flood-2 various activities like: treatment to animals, artificial insemination, fodder mini-kits, special visits, vaccination, etc. were initiated.

1987-88

  • Expansion of Wankaner and Vinchhiya chilling centers and related civil work was taken up.

1988-89

  • From 02-11-1988 the milk union took back the management of the dairy from the corporation.
  • Milk-competition was successfully organized during 14-02-1988 to 28-02-1988.

1989-90

  • Our milk union got the general membership of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation, Anand.
  • Due to increase in milk procurement, the milk union arranged to send surplus milk to Mother dairy, New Delhi.
  • Beginning of co-operation development program with the help of NDDB.

1990-91

  • Mr. Soloman, the representative of World Bank visited our union.
  • 10 MT powder plant sanctioned by NDDB under the scheme of Operation Flood.

1991-92

  • Inauguration of wireless service in mobile animal health unit.
  • Inception of computer system in the union.

1992-93

  • Started celebrating 'Milk Day' for bringing awareness in milk producers.

1993-94

  • Co-operation Development program taken up widely in the milk co-operatives associated with our union.

1994-95

  • Started organizing exhibitions in Janmashtami Fair and other public programs for raising the sale of Gopal milk in the city of Rajkot.

1995-96

  • Started 'door-to-door' consumer awareness program in Rajkot with help of students.
  • Implementation of the scheme to rent a milko tester for starting new milk co-operative.

1996-97

  • A decision taken to give financial assistance to encourage new milk co-operatives, through Rajkot District Co-operative Bank Ltd.
  • Program for expansion of artificial insemination center under Technology Mission on Dairy Development scheme.
  • Started the sale of Gopal milk in the city of Jamnagar.

1997-98

  • The first bulk cooling unit incepted at Motimarad.
  • Beginning of Auto milk collection system (computerized) at milk co-operative level.
  • Implementation of Group Insurance for the members.

1998-99

  • From 14/12/1998, we started packing Amul milk to be marketed by the Federation.
  • Computerization of Dairy Dock.

1999-2000

  • Implementation of the scheme 'Loan for milch animal' supported by Gujarat Minority Financing Corporation Ltd.

2000-01

  • Beginning of Janshree Insurance Scheme.
  • The milk union became a profit making organization by zeroing down the cumulative loss.

2001-02

  • Started giving scholarships under Educational Assistance scheme.

2002-03

  • Dr. Verghese Kurien, the pioneer of white revolution (operation flood) attended the 41st annual general body meeting of the union.
  • Scheme of Prize-draw implemented as a part of raising the sale of Gopal milk.
  • Launching of Gopal Amrut Chhas in open market.
  • Started packing Amrut Sterilized Flavoured milk.
  • Started paying a dividend of 15% for the first time.

2003-04

  • Bought Milko-scan machine for the laboratory.
  • Gopal sterilized flavoured milk made available in three flavours.
  • Launching of Gopal Anmol in 5 liters-pack.
  • Beginning of Mobile Milk Testing program by the union in Rajkot city.
  • 3000 liters Homonizer and 1000 liters new pasteurizer put into operation.
  • Decision to start treatment camps again.

2004-05

  • For the first time our milk union was awarded ISO 9000:2000 and HCCP certificate.

2005-06

  • Shree Parthibhai Bhatol, Chairman, Gujarat Co-operative milk Marketing Federation, visited Rajkot dairy.
  • Gujarat Live Stock Development Board distributed 39 bulls as assistance to the union.
  • Bulk milk cooling units put to operation at Majewadi and Moti Barar.

2006-07

  • Launching of Amul brand milk following the GCMMF's decision to market liquid milk under a common brand name 'Amul' through all the milk unions of Gujarat.
  • Prepared 500 toilet blocks under Rural Sanitation scheme of UNICEF.

2007-08

  • The union started Mass Tree Plantation Program.
  • Implementation of Fertility Improvement Program.
  • Bulk cooling unit put to operation at Jamkandorna.

2008-09

  • Started Productivity Enhancement Program (PEP project).
  • Initiation of semen production program by placing Gir and Jafrabadi bulls in the farm at Od, managed by Kheda District Milk Union.
  • Setting up new CIP tank, Ghee production plant, R.O. Plant and milko scan minor which is used for testing the precise quality of milk.
  • Launching of Amul Tea Special milk in 1 ltr. pack.

2009-10

  • For the first time, 4 women representatives got elected in the Board of Directors.
  • Implementation of 'Goal Setting Program' with the help of the Federation.
  • Establishing milk Homonizer Machine imported from Sweden.
  • The union acquired Export-Import License for the first time.
  • Implementation of Consumer Awareness program for the customers of Rajkot City.
  • Bulk Cooling Machines put to operation on several milk co-operatives under Clean Milk Production project.
